FIRST NEW MEXICO MEASLES CASE OF 2025 CONFIRMED
Measles is HIGHLY contagious and spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It is so “contagious that if one person has it, 9 out of 10 people of all ages around him or her will also become infected” (CDC, 2025). “I t is important to get up to date on vaccinations now, especially if you or your children are not fully immunized for measles ,” said Dr. Miranda Durham , NMDOH Chief Medical Officer. “ Measles can spread easily… if you're not current on the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine”.
Symptoms of measles, appearing 7-21 days after exposure, include:
● High Fever (101-105° F)
● Cough, runny nose (coryza) and red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis).
● Tiny white spots (Koplik spots) may appear inside the mouth 2-3 to days after the first symptoms
● Loss of appetite, fatigue
● Rash appears 3-5 days after the first symptoms, usually beginning at the hairline and spreading downward to the neck, trunk, arms, legs, and feet.
To ensure the health and safety of all BSD community members, please check with your healthcare provider on the status of you or your student’s MMR vaccine.
